Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA: First Flight, First Layover.

mlsWhen I saw my first flight on the roster and it says KUL – the IATA airport code for Kuala Lumpur International Airport, I could not believe it. Malaysia is simply my most favourite country in the world so I got really excited about it, and the best thing was, I flown with a fellow trainee from South Korea and it somehow made me feel comfortable and less nervous.

Every flights starts from checking in to your flight, then you have to proceed to your briefing room afterward. In the briefing, the seniors will check you documents, grooming & uniform standard, and finally the most dreaded safe talk – wherein 13509143_10209958443225692_5557089526388746908_nthe purser will ask you one question related to emergency, medical, or security. The briefing usually takes 30-45 minutes to finish, and from there, there will be a shuttle bus that will take us right to the aircraft.

As I boarded the plane, I felt lost. The crews started their security searches whilst I stood there and watched. I feel like I was dreaming and floating. Could not believe that I stepped into the plane for the first time as a cabin crew, my dream job.

The most amazing part of being a SUPY crew is having the privilege to sit on the flight deck during take-off and landing. It was truly a priceless experience!

The flight from Dubai to Kuala Lumpur approximately takes seven hours. The flight was full and despite being a trainee crew, I also had to help my colleagues by double-ending the cart to finish off the meal service as soon as we can. It was fun learning experience! Hours later, we finally landed in Malaysia. We walked through the airport concourses and to be honest, I felt like a celebrity when we are being gazed upon by the people! It was hot and humid when landed and I quickly fell asleep on the bus heading to our hotel.

The bus ride from the airport to the hotel in downtown KL took us two hours due to the Friday traffic jam, but all my exhaustion and tiredness soon faded away when I saw my room with a comfy bed and a spectacular view of the Petronas Twin Towers!

I texted my local Malaysian friends that I already arrived. They came and fetched me at the hotel. I told them to bring me to local areas (not the fancy ones) so they brought me to a place called Kampung Baru.

A trip to Malaysia is not a trip to Malaysia without having their very popular street food, Satay. I was really craving for it so I totally ate lots like there is no tomorrow!

What is Satay?
➡︎Satay is a dish of seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce. It may consist of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef, pork, fish, other meats, or tofu; the more authentic version uses skewers from the midrib of the coconut palm frond, although bamboo skewers are often used. These are grilled or barbecued over a wood or charcoal fire, then served with various spicy seasonings. (source: wikipedia.org)

Another popular street food in Southeast Asia called ‘steamboat’

Hot pot (also known as steamboat in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, China, and Brunei), refers to several East Asian varieties of stew, consisting of a simmering metal pot of stock at the centre of the dining table. While the hot pot is kept simmering, ingredients are placed into the pot and are cooked at the table. Typical hot pot dishes include thinly sliced meat, leaf vegetables, mushrooms, wontons, egg dumplings, tofu and seafood. The cooked food is usually eaten with a dipping sauce. Hot pot meals are usually eaten in the winter during supper time. (source: wikipedia.org)

We also went to a popular tourist spot called Merdeka Square which I was not able to visit when I went to Malaysia a year ago. It is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Literally Independence Square, it was formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang or simply the “Padang” and was used as the cricket green of the Selangor Club (now Royal Selangor Club). It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on 31 August 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the usual venue for the annual National Day Parade.

After a tiring night, I decided to go back to the hotel and rest since I need to fly back to Dubai the next day. I stayed in the pool side for a while and had my cigarettes. Having the chance to see Malaysia again is an extremely precious moment for me. I would love to see it again and will never get tired of it. Terima kasih banyak, Malaysia. Saya suka, saya suka!
